The Ready-Made Plate, or Prato Feito (also known as PF) as it is called in Brazil, is much more of a national dish than feijoada ever was. Its not only simple but delicious. I ate it almost everyday while living in Brazil and never got tired of this perfect and fulfilling mix. The dish normally consists of meat, be it beef, chicken, linguiça, fish or even just an egg along with white rice and either red or black beans. Most of the time, farofa (toasted manioc flour) is added as a side or on top and almost always the dish is made using a healthy dose of salt. Occasionally other items are added, such as french fries, a simple salad, etc…its really up to the taste of the individual. Add a ice cold beer or a guaraná to wash it down and pronto! There’s nothing better.

As far as where it might have come from, who knows. What is known is that all of the ingredients are fairly low-cost and simple to prepare, making this dish a common staple for all Brazilians. Variants can be easily found among other cultures of Latin America and Africa.
