Here’s two interesting phrases in Brazilian Portuguese. One is to ‘flake’ on someone (which means to say you will show up for an event, then not show up), and that is ‘dar bolo para em alguém’ (to give cake to on someone). The other phrase is to be the ‘third wheel’ (which means to go out with two other people who are on a date), and that is ‘segurar a vela’ (to hold the candle).
“Hold a candle” has the exact same meaning in Hungarian, but something totally different in English… :)
A expressão correta em português NÃO é “Maria deu bolo PRA mim”. Mas sim: “Maria deu bolo EM mim”.

I’m Brazilian from Rio and I like it when you post these expressions because I learn English from them. I thought that “dar bolo em alguém” was “stand somebody up”. So flake on someone or stand someone up are synonyms.
